  • Pump Those Brakes, Big Guy: Ford’s Pre-Collision Assist is Here to Help

Caucasian male driving with one hand covering his eyes, with a frightened expression as he's about to collide into something

Look, safety’s no joke. Kentwood Ford is located right on the north side of 97th street, so you know we’ve seen some accidents—and we mean major accidents. We’ve seen cars crunched up into light poles and cops pull up on the busy 137 avenue intersection. While everyone’s standing outside wondering what’s going on, as lanes are backed up all the way back downtown, we can’t help but think some people just aren’t paying attention to the road.

We don’t care if you’re stopped at the lights, just stop scrolling through your phone and start paying attention—your Facebook posts are still going to be there when you get home. Or, you could just ignore common sense and Snapchat your entire drive. Just don’t be surprised if you end up in an intersection explaining to a cop how you have “no idea how it happened.” Of course, adding Ford’s Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection to your vehicle won’t stop every accident, but it is a nice safety net. Here’s everything you should know about it.

    How Does It Work?

Using radar sensors and cameras to detect other objects in the distance, the Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection helps prevent potential collisions with both vehicles and pedestrians. The system alerts you when incoming vehicles or pedestrians enter your driving path with a flash on your windshield and can even engage the brakes if necessary.

This is especially useful with how ridiculous the traffic can get when you’re taking the Henday and speeds vary from a standstill to freeway. And look, we all have to get to work before 8am so it’s no excuse to mindlessly swerve out of blocked-up lanes and speed because you might hit something not even the Pre-Collision Assist can save you from—and at best you’ll end up two car lengths ahead.

    How To Use Pre-Collision Assist

You can change the sensitivity of—or turn off—the Pre-Collision Assist warning system by using the controls on your steering wheel.

    1. Scroll to driver assist > Pre-Collision > Alert Sensitivity
    2. From there, change it to either High, Normal, or Low to match your preference.

The low setting sends fewer warnings while the higher setting gives them to you earlier and more frequently within wider gaps between your vehicle and the object ahead.

    Who’s This For?

We recommend adding Pre-Collision Assist to your Ford vehicle if you’re not confident enough in your braking reaction time while driving. But that still doesn’t mean you get a pass on taking your eyes off the road—this is merely a driving aid. You still have to keep watch of your surroundings and drive with caution. The Pre-Collision Assist helps those with slower reactions times for braking and gives more peace of mind for those that don’t.

Otherwise, if you have any other questions about the system, or any other of our Ford safety technologies, feel free to give your friends at Kentwood Ford a shout. We just want to look after you as best as we can, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
