Happy holidays from all of us here at Kentwood Ford! While some of you plan to travel out of town for the holidays season, we just wanted to send out a few friendly reminders to make sure you and your family stay safe while travelling on the road. Whether you’re making the trip to Calgary or coming back home to Edmonton, here’s a few things to keep in mind on your drive!
Plan your route
Check the road and weather conditions before you begin your trip. If the authorities advise against driving, reconsider whether you need to go out or if you can afford to delay your drive another 24 hours. Some stretches of highway and access roads are worse than others in the colder seasons. If you can avoid a particularly hazardous or restricted road, it certainly pays to do so instead of setting off and having no choice.
Not only is it our favourite Kanye West song, but it’s also one of the most important things for you to do while driving in the winter. The added snow and ice heavily increase the stopping time for your vehicle, so it’s best to make sure you have enough leeway space. You should also give yourself lots of time so you don’t need to rush.
Two car lengths, minimum
As you drive, allow for a wide space between you and the vehicle ahead; the faster you’re going, the larger the space should be. You also don’t know how easily other vehicles on the road are able to brake, so be sure to let people following too close pass you.
Don’t forget the leftovers!
Better bring the extra tupperware to your family’s place and back because there’s gonna be so much food left from the dinner! We suggest keeping some extra space in your cargo area for all the pots, pans, rice cookers, and giant plastic containers you’re probably gonna be hauling back and forth in-between the drives.
No matter where you’re going or how far you’re travelling, we at Kentwood Ford wish you and your family safe travels and happy holidays!
